CABINET LIST TIPS

Here are some tips to making a list of cabinets for your kitchen. This list isn't exhaustive, but will hopefully remind you of potential issues or needs to look out for. Have questions? Call us at 919-336-0343 or fill out our contact form for us to reach out to you.

  • First, figure out what door style and finish you would like. Pricing is determined by this information.
  • Make sure to specify if you want any specialty finish.
  • We highly recommend ordering at least a finish sample before ordering your cabinets. A door sample in your desired style and finish will give you an even better idea of what your cabinets will look like. You can order these samples on our Products page.
  • Cabinets that need finished ends are:
    • Base cabinets at the end of a row of cabinets where the side doesn't end against a wall.
    • The two cabinets on either side of dishwasher
    • The two cabinets on either side of a range
    • Wall cabinets at the end of a row of cabinets where the side doesn't end against a wall.
    • Wall cabinets on either side of the sink/window over a sink.
    • Wall cabinets on either side of a range hood.
    • Any cabinet that sticks out further than the cabinets around it where you will side it's sides
    • Cabinets at the ends of islands
    • Tall cabinets (oven, pantry, linen cabinets)
  • Always get a sink cabinet that is 3" wider than your sink. Same for your cooktop.
  • Sink cabinets can double as cabinets for cooktops
  • For a more finished look, order two refrigerator end panels to flank either side of the refrigerator.
  • For the wall cabinet over the refrigerator, we recommend ordering a 24" deep cabinet instead of a 12" deep cabinet. This way you can reach the cabinet while standing in front of your refrigerator.
  • Order a piece of filler to fill in the gap between the top of your fridge and the bottom of the cabinet above it. You can also specify to have the bottom of the cabinet finished so you aren't looking up at an unfinished cabinet.
  • For islands, order a panel to cover the back of the row of cabinets. If ordering for an island with two rows of cabinets back to back, order panels for the sides of the island to hide the seam between the two rows of cabinets.
  • Always order at least one extra piece of all the trim pieces (toe kick, shoe molding, light rail, scribe molding, crown molding, sub-rail, etc.). You may have some left over after installation but it's good to have extra in case of mistakes with install.
  • Filler pieces only come in 3" or 6" wide pieces. If you need a smaller width, you will need to rip the piece in the field to your required dimensions. Custom widths are available for an extra fee.
  • Shoe molding is usually installed anywhere a cabinet meets the floor including the sides or the back of an island. Make sure to account for this extra material in the quantity on your list.
  • Make sure to specify if you want a wall cabinet to have glass doors. You can find the glass options on our Doors page. Most base cabinets cannot have glass doors.
  • If you desire to have paneled appliances, please send the specifications for these appliances to us with your list.
  • When listing a tall oven cabinet, please include the specifications for your oven. It's important to know if the oven is going to be too deep or too wide for the cabinet.
